The Friday Five for 24 July 2009: Writing Five

1. Do you like your handwriting?
Yes. It's one of the few things I've always liked about me.

2. Do you prefer to print or write in cursive?
I sued to write i cursive, but switched to print a couple of years ago. If you never saw how my current handwriting looks like, go here.

3. Do you think handwriting should be graded in school?
Only as far as "readable" or "unreadable" because grading tests and papers is made much more difficult if you need to hire an Egyptologist (to decipher the heiroglyphs) first ;)

4. Do you prefer writing in pencil or pen?
Pen. I had a very dearly loved mechanical pencil about ten years ago, but after that one broke, I switched back to ink.

5. When you write in ink, do you prefer a neutral color such as black or blue, or a fun color like purple or green?
These days, I only use blue ink. However, there was a time when I collected (and used) all kinds of crazy colous. My schoolwork back then looked weird ^_^;;;

1787 words for today. And still no writer's block in sight.
We'll see how much I'll get done during the next few days...
Packing's gonna be such a rush tomorrow. I elave at about 7 PM, but it still feels like I'll never get anything done until then.
ARGH.

22822 / 50000 words. 46% done!

( Nov. 12th, 2008 11:19 pm)
2012 words for today. Yay ^^
As expected, the 20,000 word barrier is no more.
I've finally arrived at a rather important part of the plot.
Also, the third of my main characters is in serious trouble and I have no idea how to get him out ;)

21035 / 50000 words. 42% done!

ETA: Okay, figured out a way to get my MC #3 out of trouble. Pretty cheap, but whatever works, works ;)

Even though I never seem to be able to get myself to write before 8 PM, I somehow keep meeting my daily requirement.
I think I'm a writing alien or something XDD
Anyway, today, I managed to add 1950 words, which means...

19023 / 50000 words. 38% done!

And tomorrow, the 20k mark is gonna fall ^____^

( Nov. 10th, 2008 11:19 pm)
Despite my nose hurting, eyes stinging and me feeling terribly tired, I managed to crank out nearly 1900 words.
And pretty decent words they are, too :D
I'm a hero... not *lol*
Anyway, new wordcount as of tonight:

17078 / 50000 words. 34% done!

So, the second week of NaNoWriMo 2008 has officially started. And I'm doing better than ever, having already written about a thousand words since midnight. I'm really starting to get into the story, and I still can't help but love it to little green and purple bits.
Y'know, before starting my NaNo project, I didn't think I could ever do decent original fiction or, in fact, any original fiction at all. I was afraid to be stuck to fan fiction forever.
Now, I certainly mean no disrespect to fan fiction. Hell, no! Some of my best friends are fanfic writers, and damn talented ones at that. Hell, I wish I could do with words what a lot of them can!
Still, I myself always wanted to be able to write original fiction in addition to fanfic stuff. But I kinda felt I needed the "real" people in order to be able to relate to the characters enough to make the story good.
Suddenly, I feel so much in touch with some of my main - original - characters it's almost silly. And writing scene after scene is at least as fun as watching a good movie.
I also keep getting hit with ideas upon ideas to keep the plot going, and some of the scenes I'm planning to do are so emotional and beautiful, they bring actual tears to my eyes. Wow, writing those will be weird ;)
Anyway. Woah. This is... SO awesome.
I think doing NaNo this year was one of the five best ideas I ever had in my life.

Er... yeah ^_^;;;
Ridiculously happy Jessy updating her wordcount to show off and then signing off for today XD

I haven't talked about my novel yet, have I?
Well, bascially, I've had two decent ideas lately. Both of them are based on weird dreams I've had. Actually, those two dreams happened only a couple of days apart from each other.
Both times, when I woke up, I desperately tried to cling to the fragments I remnembered and somehow managed to turn them into scenarios that other people might be able to udnerstand.

The first one: "Mizubito". It is a sci fi kinda thing. Pretty psychological, I guess.
Unfortunately, I can't say anything more about it, since even translating the title would be one hell of a spoiler.
Also, I don't really have concrete characters, just a vague plot and a (at least to me) very gripping scenario.
On the other hand, I'd probably be able to squeeze lots of words out of it since it's still rather shapeless so I can stuff things in everywhere.

The second one originally looked more like a short story thing to me. The tentative title is "The Place Behind". It's a dark fantasy story with an atmosphere so tight, it's almost too much.
For this, I actually have at least three main characters more or less fleshed out. I even did some research on the names so they make some sense (but certainly not at first glance, I'm not going Mary Sue here *lol*).
But like I said, at first, this didn't feel like an idea big enough for a novel. At all. However, I'm just to terribly attached to the whole thing that I might be able to expand it to something longer. Also, since I plan to go all out on descriptions and flashbacks... who knows? Maybe it'll work.

So, yeah... For now, "The Place Behind" it is.

By the way, they're both original stories. No idea why I keep having inspirations for things that are not fan fiction, but who cares? As long as it's good</> bearable...

I... uh... will be participating in NaNoWriMo this year.
After the disaster that was Biffno 2008, I wasn't exactly motivated to even consider doing this.
Unfortunately, I was overrun by what may very well be the best idea I ever had. And instead of trying to type it up on my own, I decided to join the NaNo community for the 10th anniversary.
Go me!!!
BTW, my profile is here, I'd be happy if the other participants on my flist added me as a buddy *hint hint*
Waaahhhh, I'm all psyched now *giggles*
However, gotta do a lot of research before November 1st...
#1
Get better. And it starts on January 23! That is not to say that I'm not afraid. I'm utterly terrified. But everything else would be odd, I suppose. And I'm going there, don't worry.

#2
Have an awesome wedding. One with lots of presents and good food and nice people. Oh yeah!
... crap, I still need a best (wo)man. HALP.

#3
Write. Start writing again and, preferably, don't stop. Never ever stop. I have so many worlds, so many places and things and people and images in my head. They cannot stay there forever. I've been writing all my life, and it has made me happy, if only in my little world and only for a while. But it was good. And I need to, want to get hold of that again, grasp it, cling to it and never, ever let go. Writing is all about me, I am all about writing and I want it back.

#4
Make a decent website about Kai #2, if possible, bilingual. That's gonna be a lot of work, but I feel like doing it. Of course, if I wasn't the big old coward I am, I'd add "get a hold of the guy and meet him", but y'know...

#5
Read more. Books, I mean. I read loads and loads, but it's mostly stuff on the 'net. I know, a lot of it can be useful and educating and stuff, but the way things are now makes me feel somewhat inferior. So, read, dammit!

Phew. That was a lot. Actually, I've never made resolves before. So let's see how this works, shall we?

- So apparently, the 'Ray DVD will be released next spring. Well, better very late than never.

- Another try at the uni office tomorrow morning. [livejournal.com profile] yamasagi is driving me there. And although I have no need to worry, I still do. But that's just me. I just want this over with, hand in my documents and get my ID. Pretty please? *puppy eyes*

- My PC is slow, unstable and crash-prone. Vista has to go and I'm not trying it again before the first Service Pack gets released some time next year. [livejournal.com profile] yamasagi has one legal copy of Windows XP left. It's in German, which pains me to no end, but I guess I'll have to go with it because I really need a reliable computer when my classes start (the 15th).

- Also, because of said classes, there will be no NaNoWriMo for me this year. Maybe next, but I absolutely need to settle in and do well, so of course, that's absolute priority. However, Biffno next March? Count me in.

- Finally, a funny quote from tonight:
[livejournal.com profile] yamasagi (swearing): "Shit fucking"
[livejournal.com profile] jessybxx: "It's the other way around"
[livejournal.com profile] yamasagi: "Fuck shitting"

My little brother's got a small message board. It's mainly used by him and his friends. There, they plan their role playing sessions and related thigns.
But now, the guy actually started a series of small writing challenges. And right now, his friends seem to be tagging along.
That's my bro *proud*

882 words for today.
Today's Biffno session was really all about quality. Which is a good thing once in a while.
I know it might be a laughable effort to the real talented writers, but I feel like I just managed a more than strong continuation to yesterday's secene. Actually, writing a certain sentence in it nearly made me squeal. Needless to say, it's dark and scary and evil and brutal. Wow, I'm sick. I love me :3
And I think I'm really beginning to realize some of my strengths... provided I do have them and am not just imagining things, that is.
But, whatever the actual result will be, one thing's for sure. Doing Biffno was one helluva good idea.
Yea.

So it seems like people liked "an" episode 01 despite teh ebil cliffhanger of doom ;)
Don't worry, I had already started working on episode 02 before doing the final editing on 01.
Which means it might take shape BEFORE I go to Dresden on Friday morning.
And this one will bring more light into the dark... on the one hand.
On the other hand, it'll be the REAL test for the whole series since apart from introducing some more characters (those you only heard talking until now), it also reveals the basic background.
And that's what people will either like cuz of its dorky weirdness or just plain hate.
But I don't really care right now and I'm not backing off either. I learned that I can do this and I will.
Well, I guess that's it for now.
Thanks for the reviews, BTW. You guys rock ^_^

( Jul. 31st, 2006 03:08 pm)
"Silent Miracles" it the ideal stuff to listen to between waking up and actually getting up.
It never fails to makes me drop out of bed with a huge, stupid grin on my face ^___^

Apart from that...
It seems like ayatsuri ningyou is evil.
My final count last night said 1666 words >:D

Tho today's prolly gonna be the last day of editing and then it's off to scare my poor beta X_x
And KaiMuse is sitting in my neck because he's annoyed and nervous. And he's right cuz it's such a nasty cliffhanger ^_~ He wants to know how the thing's gonna go on. Well, I would, too, if I was in his situation, ehe XD
Talked to mum about the name thingy. She said I'm not named after anyone and that she always knew that if she'd ever have a daughter, she'd name her Manuela. D'Oh XD And had I been a boy, I'd prolly have gotten some Scandinavian, kinda Metal-sounding name like Sven O_o

Okay, on with some observations about my writing (and suddenly, I don't even feel like adding "pseudo" or "wannabe" or something like that any more):

Well, I guess I'll just go and burn my German stuff. It reads like an instruction manual with dialogues compared to the first, rough version of "ayatsuri ningyou in English - chapter one". OMFG.
Somehow, I never managed to go into the minds of the characters back then. It felt like a referee observing some frickin' soccer match, fer cryin' out loud >:O But when writing in English, that thing just happens on its own and I doubt I could even do anything if I had to leave it out.
I guess that's a good sign ;)

And then, I was scared about the fact that my vocabulary might not be enough. But I seem to know a lot more words than I had thought, and for the though cases (when I'm missing a synonym or simply have no idea what some particularly difficult technical thing is called) there's still my big fat friend called dictionary (and the good, old German detour XD).
Not to mention the fact that German is an awkward language to write fiction in and that English keeps amazing me in that respect. All the cool stuff you can make out of it is just breathtaking!! And I might add "A big slap in the face to everyone who has the opportunity to learn it and doesn't give a flyin' fuck >:O"

So that's two more big, fat concerns out of the way. And I still think that this is indeed working and that I can really do this :D
(... and one thing is for certain: If my stuff still turns out to suck, at least it's somewhat grammatically correct and lacks spelling errors XD)

I'm bad at making up names for aliens and their planets. Really bad.
That's why I grabbed some old notes and combined the ones I like best. They're still pretty stupid, but what's in a name aynway? XD
But that's not what I wanted to say.
At one point, I made up a shitload of (human) characters. Never used any of them, like 99% of times, but anyway.
Guess I was on a sort of multi cultural trip back then cuz I made them come from allll sorts of different countries.I guess this is point #3750674 on my list of "things that make ayatsuri ningyou seem more like an anime than anything else", ehe XD
As I usually write up whole biographies for my characters, complete with birthdates and such, they all had cities of birth, too.
When I noticed I had an Italian girl as well, I checked her city just out of curiosity.
And guess what? It was neither Rome nor Venice nor Pisa. It. Was. Torino.
That really made me giggle cuz [livejournal.com profile] silicondreams keeps wondering why everyone knows her city. Well, it seems like even six or seven years ago, the first Italian city that came to my mind was yours, dear ;)

Oh well. That's enough spamming for today. C ya tomorrow ^___^
... somehow, didn't find the time. Bugger.
Anyway.
Didn't get very far with note-taking Thursady night. Apparently, something ELSE wanted to be typed. Like, right there and then.
Translation: I'm 1074 words into episode one O___O
Actually, I'd like to call it the basic frame for episode one cuz I'd really like to keep that weird cliffhanger at the end XD
Which means that next, a shitload of adding and fleshing out will be in order.
Tho I somehow don't think that's gonna be too much of a problem cuz the second I had closed Kan-chan (KaiMuse: "You're not gonna go to bed now, right You ARE? Hey, don't do that to me! And no, I don't fuckin' care how dead you'll be tomorrow if you type the whole night, just GET ON WITH IT" XD) I was FLOODED with more stuff I could put into the thing to make it better.

And I observed some other stuff, too.
But I'll tell you about that later ;)
jessybxx: (Anime - Redhead (from REC))
( Jul. 27th, 2006 08:37 pm)
... I might be able to do this.
I might have the first few lines of the first chapter. They just somehow exploded out of my head into a text file.
Tho I'll need to make a library of notes before I can go any further. But hey, it's a start.

... and foobar again had the right song ready ;)
jessybxx: (Nani?)
( Jul. 26th, 2006 07:06 pm)
... I told [livejournal.com profile] silicondreams far too many details about an (my skeleton in the closet a.k.a. the weird mix/crossover universe of stories I've been stuck with since it first came into existence back in elementrary school).
Guess that's what the heat and chatting late into the night with awesome people does to you ;)
And she actually got me thinking about trying to rework it into something that could be read - and understood - by people other than me.
Somehow, I'm starting to believe it might not be an impossible thing to try...
O_____O
