Warning: If you hated the movie, don't read on.
So... was it good? Gosh, yes. Was it disappointing compared to the first part? On the contrary.
Okay, the fact that I'm talking about the dubbed version might change some things, at least if the differences are as striking as they were with part one.
The German dubs of those movies are something special. I saw part one in German and English and I guess that's why I'm able to judge that.
Everyone who knows me knows that I prefer the original audio in 97% of cases. But of the other 3%, at least one third is made up of PotC. Because the dub (and especially the performance of one Marcus Off, the voice actor playing Jonny Depp*) adds something to the movies that IMHO isn't quite there in the original. I wish it was different but it's not. Jack Sparrow with the body of Johnny Depp and the voice of Marcus is just funny and weird and adorably dorky. Marcus love <3
(Yell at me if you like, but that's how I feel about this.)
Now, what else.
One of the things that makes me love any movie in an instant is DETAIL.
Y'know, when looking at things immediately tells you about the fun the filmmkaers had in designing and creating them. And in case of PotC 2 (BTW, don't ask about the German title or I might start crying T_T), this was simply screaming at you in every scene.
I mean, just look at how each of Davey Jones' crew members represents another animal of the ocean. And how beautifully rotten their ship looks. And remember the lagoon where the voodoo woman lives, and not to forget the woodoo woman herself? All of that stuff just looked so cool that I was close to jumping up and running around the cinema, squealing O_o
Next, ideas.
Apart from the design stuff, the whole movie was just BURSTING with weird scenes and slapstick (Jack Sparrow as a fruit skewer? Priceless). But there were some nice, little scary moments woven into the whole thing, too, which made it even better.
I don't think I have to mention how Johnny was all kinds of hot (Eyeliner RAWR) and wacky and strange and just cracked everyone up solely by the way he walks (or runs), right? Cuz this is the way of the world in PotC world :D
The music was great once again, but I'm biased since PotC 1 was one of my favourite movie soundtracks ever. And this time, Hans Zimmer did the stuff personally instead of recruiting one of his subordinates *lol*
I liked the story as well. There were some nice plot twists and all of the characters we love (or hate) from the first movie returned one way or the other.
Okay, the sea monster was lame, I think a lot of people agree on that.
But the whole thing still left you with your head full of amazing pictures, funny quotes and a lot of Johnny (:P~~~~) which is definately a very good thing. Which is more than what you can say of the open ending, but we all knew it was coming, what with part three already done. Meh.
Summary: Of course, nobody would expect deep, philosophical insight from such a movie. Especially not those who have watched part one. But what's so wrong about having fun, action and laughing your ass of at one of the most unique characters in movie history? If you look for an answer to your questions about the meaning of life, stay at home and read some good books. But if you look for action, comedy, great visuals and tons of funny lines to quote afterwards ("I got a jar of saaahand!"), look no further.
Pirate love!!!
(Though waiting for the DVD will be hell...)
*BTW, Marcus does Johnny only in the PotC movies, he usually has another voice actor. That's because Marcus is mainly a comedy specialist (played a very cute Eric Idle in the excellent dub of Monty Python's Flying Circus which is also part of my aforementioned 3%) and therefore perfect as Jack Sparrow.
The only drawback was that even among the few people at the cinema (probably a dozen, which is not really unusual) we managed to have a "screamer", e.g. the sort of person who not only comments everything and laughs like a hyena but also does those things at the volume of two jumbo jets landing next to yout seat. What fun... not =_=

The German Jack Sparrow is a completely different character. And I prefer the original.

That's a good explanation O_o
Well, to each their own and everyone in my family seems to love German Jack ;)

Original Jack sounds nuts, not gay XD

(Alas, I found POTC1 much slashier than POTC2. But that's good, because I won't be tempted to write POTC2 fic. Whew.)

True! We really didn't notice its length at all. Which is a good thing :)

And I agree to sorion if she says Jack sounds gay in german... my best friend (just to mention he is male XD)... didn't see PotC I in the first place, and when I asked him how he liked PotC II he said that Jack was a little too gay for him... which I think is kinda "sad", because he definitely rocks.... I mean, for ME, he rocks either way, but you know men often have problems with that gay part XD

And word on the "men having problems with the gay part". Maybe I'm just biased because I love Marcus Off (he's one of the "German Python dub gang" after all, like Kai Taschner <3).
