Doctor Who - The German dub

Remember when I said that, in order to not fuck up the dub's translation, Kai #2 would have to be even more of a genius than me?
Well, I can now officially state that he is exactly that.

In other words: The German dub is excellent. For more, read on.



I'm still in awe as to how accurate the translation was. There was only one bit that sounded a bit awkward to me, but after careful deliberation and discussion with yamasagi we agreed that it wasn't a mistake after all.
Of course, the dialects disappeared, but 95% of the humour was retained. Which is more than even I would have expected.
The voice actors seem to have been selected very carefully (even those for smaller roles, like cute Rafallo in episode #2) and all of them did an amazing job, successfully transferring the emotion and the special atmosphere of the show to the new language. Brilliant.

As for the names, TARDIS and Time Lord thankfully haven't been changed, "Sonic Screwdriver" became "Überschallschrauber". Which is just as dorky and silly as the original, and I totally approve of it.

What amazed me was the extremely positive reaction of the German fandom. I was quite sure that there would be lots of flaming and bashing, regardless of the quality of the dub. But alas, it seems like they actually listened and therefore, most of them appreciate the dub for what it is - really, really good.

My mum liked it, too. She was really amused by episode one, which surprised me. I thought people would think it's weird. Maybe I am XD
Anyway, we'll keep watching. And believe me, the dub deserves it. It's that good.

Conclusion: Kai Taschner, we need a few hundred clones of you. That way, this country will never have to be worried about bad dubs ever again. Just kidding ;)
