DH review
*is listening to HP7 audio book*
Hell, that man is such a genious <3
Can't wait to get to the part containing the two German sentences *snickers*
The Plot
- Overall, I liked the story a lot better, compared to HBP. There were hardly any slow/boring parts, I totally approve of all the action and I thought the whole "travelling" idea was pretty neat.
- Of course, I, like everyone else older than seven and/or with more than two braincells, spotted the gazillion of political references. The whole Muggle-Born Registration Commission aspect was so Holocaust, it made me cringe. But it fit.
- The Lupin/Tonks thing, however, annoyed me to death. If having a child between a human and a werewolf is such a bad idea, then don't have one, for fuck's sake. This was either Tonks being all "I don't care about the consequences, I just love Remus so much" or - and this seems a lot more likely to me looking at her feeble and awkward attempts at romance - JKR being old-fashioned and conservative. "If it happens, it happens". Yuck.
- Also, what's with nearly all the women becoming mothers and housewives? And I thought the wizarding world was better than ours *sulks*
- Speaking of romance: Dear JKR, if you ever decide to write another novel... just leave it out, alright? I'm not saying I could do it any better, but the whole Harry/Ginny thingy was just... nah.
The Dead
- JKR said that two main characters die. Now which of the nine does she consider major? I suppose it's Fred and Snape. Well, for me, they're all more or less on the same level, importance-wise. Also, 50+ died during the Hogwarts battle - What is this? Bloody Hamlet? XD
- For some reason, the deaths of Hedwig and Dobby touched me a lot more than that of Mad-Eye. I'm not sure what to think about Lupin since he intended to leave his family behind. Tonks made me sad, too. Poor Teddy's an orpan now. And then, Fred.... That was just... terrible. The twins have always been among my favourite characters, especially since OotP: And now? I mean, it was sorta foreshadowed with the ear incindent, but... *wipes eyes*
- Snape's death was described a little too quickly, but it was still a touching scene. Probably my favourite ever, in any of the books.
The Ending
- In general, the last sixty pages were pretty good. The revelation of Snape's true intentions really got me, and when Harry found out he indeed was supposed to die, I hated Dumbledore. When it comes to identifying with the characters and feeling their rage and fear, DH beats OotP. Which I wouldn't have thought was possible. Good job there.
- BTW, am I the only one who was reminded of The Matrix while reading that imaginary King's Cross part? O_o
The Epilogue
- No. Just, y'know, no. That thing is... I tell you what. Let's just not talk about it, 'kay? For now, I'll just mentally cut off the book after the last regular chapter.
And now?
- Well, I hope JKR won't give in to whatever pressure fans/the media/the economy will doubtlessly put onto her from now on. I don't think I'd like a series of "Harry Potter's Children and...". However, a kind of encyclopedia would be pure awesome.
Whoo, this turned out slightly longer than I thought. Well, who cares? =) *starts working on newspaper article, waiting for people to contradict her review* ^_~
BTW, the German title for the book has been set. It will be called "Harry Potter und die Heiligtümer des Todes" (it had been mistranslated before because nobody was sure whether the 'hallows' were supposed to be people or things. Well, now we know ^_~) and it will be released on October 27. Poor translator. He was only allowed to start after the book had been released. Someone's got a heckload of work ahead of him now O_o
